About Us
The Illinois Historical Art Project [IHAP] is dedicated to original source material and biographical information on artists of Illinois. 99% of all web-based information on Illinois artists comes from IHAP. Because we have used over 100,000 source documents such as newspaper articles, artist correspondence, rare exhibition catalogues and diaries to compile biographical information on Illinois artists, our information is accurate.

Your first source for biographical information on artists should be the Ryerson Library of the Art Institute. Their entire library catalogue is on-line at http://www.artic.edu. After you have exhausted this source, we will be able to provide you information that is in-depth and will cover Illinois artists like none other, on-line or off-line.

IHAP has compiled histories of over 1,500 artists who meet the following criteria:
· BORN before 1/1/1900.
· LIVED at least ½ their career in Illinois or closely attached to the state.
· PRIMARILY were painters, not sculptors or printmakers.

IHAP makes no distinction about the style of an artist’s oeuvre; whether they were modernists, impressionists, genre painters, still-life artists, scenic artists, naïve painters, etc., makes has no impact on our extensive information.

In addition, if you are interested in what artists belonged to which organization, the names of artists who studied with various professors, the institutions that own an artist’s work or any number of variant themes, our relational database will provide the answer.

If for example you are interested in George Bellow’s impact on modernism in Chicago, our database can provide a student list of those artists who studied under him at the Art Institute of Chicago and when. If you are interested in the Illinois artists who studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, for example, our database will provide a rapid answer.

Our library covers in-depth all of the art organizations functioning in Illinois since 1859 up to the present day. We have compiled a massive amount of information on these organizations from their exhibition catalogues and newspaper articles discussing their activities. There exists no other source for such in-depth information.
