[1]Much of the information is taken from Faber Birren, Henry Birren (1812-1880) Joseph Birren A Family Chronicle and Narrative, (Chicago: Privately Published, 1928) and from Joseph Birren’s chronicle of his travels, unpublished, in the possession of the author. Information is also taken from Lena M. McCauley, “Stories Of Our Artists,” The Chicago Evening Post Magazine of the Art World, 3/12/1929, p.10.

[2]He died at the Sacred Heart Sanitarium where he had been a patient for six weeks. This information comes from family records. It conflicts with the romantic story that he died painting in his studio: C. J. Bulliet, “Around the Picture Galleries: In Birren’s Studio,” Chicago Daily News, 1/27/1934, Art Section, p.26. Eleanor Jewett called his death “sudden and unlooked for,” in “Joseph P. Birren’s Death Loss to Art,” Chicago Tribune, 8/20/1933, part 8, p.4.

[3]Born in Chicago, she was educated at Notre Dame and was President of the Renaissance Club of Chicago. Chicago Social and Club Register, Crest Publishers, 1921, accessed on-line 10/8/2013.
